Looking To The Future

Inbreeding was common practice back when many breeds including the Norwich Terrier were being developed. With such diverse antecedents as we have in our breed, it was the method to set type. But the downside was the risk of reduced genetic diversity.
The natural outgrowth of inbreeding, line-breeding, was espoused by such giants as Lloyd C. Brackett. He advised mating animals who are “closely related to the same ancestor … by using for parents dogs who are closely related to that ancestor.” The objective was litter consistency. Breeders who heeded this advice, while succeeding in terms of cementing conformation traits, further limited the gene pool. In effect, we must now cope with the negative 20th-century practices, not least of which are some fertility and health issues.

Surprising as it may seem, it isn’t capacity that explains the differences that exist between individuals because most seem to have far more capacity than they will ever use. The differences that exist between individuals seem to be related to something else. The ones who achieve and outperform others seem to have within themselves the ability to use hidden resources. In other words, it’s what they are able to do with what they have that makes the difference.

The Dog Writers Association of America (DWAA) holds its annual awards banquet in New York City each February. It’s the culmination of the writing competition and of the DWAA year. At the banquet the first-place winners in each category are announced and receive the highly regarded Maxwell Medallion, an engraved medal disc on a decorative ribbon.

In February 2010, the DWAA’s 2009 Maxwell Award for Best Feature in All-Breed Magazine went to our very own Magda Omansky for On the Scent of A Killer, which appeared in the AKC Gazette, December 2008.

This article is being written to describe to breeders, owners and veterinarians who have never experienced a puppy with Puppy Strangles just what one can expect to see in such a puppy. Puppy Strangles commonly occurs in puppies between 4 weeks and 4 months of age. From what little information exists, it is believed to occur in a puppy with an immature immune system. Concurrent bacterial infection is common, although the use of antibiotic therapy alone is mostly ineffective. Most importantly, the disease appears to respond to immunosuppresive therapy, via oral corticosteroids such as prednisone and prednisolone.
