Health Testing
The NTCA Code of Ethics states that member-breeders have a responsibility to, “Perform health screening tests recommended by the NTCA that will help determine the genetic soundness of the dog or the bitch prior to breeding. Submit both positive and negative health screening test results to an open registry – CERF, OFA, CHIC, Penn HIP.”
CHIC
The Canine Health Information Center, also known as CHIC, is a centralized canine health database sponsored by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). For puppy buyers, the CHIC database provides accurate information about the results of a breeder’s health testing. For most diseases only phenotypic evaluations are possible, however, the probability that a dog will develop an inherited condition is reduced when its ancestry has been tested normal. For conditions where we have DNA tests available, the results can be used to determine whether progeny will be clear, carriers, or affected.
NTCA participates in the CHIC Program. To be issued a CHIC# the following 3 tests are required with the results (positive or negative) reported to the open registry.

Eye Disease
Eye Examination by a board-certified American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologist (ACVO). This is not a comprehensive ocular health examination, but rather an eye screening exam. The NTCA Health Committee recommends that Norwich Terriers have an initial CERF eye exam prior to breeding and another between the ages of 4 and 5 years.
